Building a Waterfront Home on the Canals in Port Macquarie

Waterfront blocks on the Port Macquarie canals rarely come up, and building on one takes careful planning from day one. We are currently constructing a custom waterfront home on one of the last remaining canal sites in Port Macquarie, and we have been documenting every stage.
If you are considering building a waterfront home on the Mid North Coast, this build is a useful look at what the early stages actually involve, from site preparation and piling through to the foundations going in.
Why the Port Macquarie canals are worth building on
The canals are one of the most sought-after places to build in Port Macquarie. Direct water access, a relaxed coastal lifestyle and a limited number of blocks make these sites genuinely rare.
This home sits on one of the last remaining waterfront sites on the canals, which is a large part of what makes the project so special for our team and our clients.
Preparing a waterfront site for piling
The first major stage was preparing the site for piling, followed by major excavations.
On a waterfront block this groundwork is critical. Piling drives support deep into stable ground and gives the home a strong, reliable base to build on, which is exactly what a canal-side site needs before anything goes up.
Cutting the site and starting the boat shed
With piling prepared, the site was cut to level and attention turned to the boat shed. Concreters were on site excavating the footings for it.
A boat shed and direct water access are among the biggest advantages of a canal home, so getting this element right early was a priority.
Blockwork and Dincel: the foundations take shape
The build then moved to blockwork and Dincel installation, which has been advancing smoothly and creating a solid, reliable foundation for the home.
What is Dincel construction?
Dincel is a permanent formwork system. Hollow wall panels lock together on site and are filled with concrete to form strong, continuous walls. Combined with blockwork, it is a durable way to build and well suited to a waterfront setting where a robust structure matters.
What happens next
With the foundations in place, the build now progresses toward walls and frame, and this unique, modern home begins to take its shape. We will continue to share updates at each stage.
